Note: People age 5 years old
and over are considered to have a disability if they report one or more of
the following criteria from one or more of the following categories as defined
by the 2000 U.S. Census:
(a) sensory disability: blindness, deafness, or severe vision or hearing impairment;
(b) physical disability: substantial limitation in the ability to perform
basic physical activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, reaching, lifting,
or carrying;
(c) mental disability: difficulty learning, remembering, or concentrating;
(d) self-care disability: difficulty dressing, bathing, or getting around
inside the home.
The same person could contribute a number (one frequency count) to more than one disability type listed in the table. Therefore, adding together the totals of different disability types for a particular state will not give the total number of people reporting a disability in that state. For example, the same person could report a sensory disability and a self-care disability. That person, thus, would add a number to the sensory total, as well as to the self-care total for their state. However, adding together the totals of different disability types for a particular state will give the number of actual disabilities reported in the state. For information on the total number of people reporting a disability by state see the State Table on total population reporting disability, by age group.
To find the percent of people age 5-15 in a state reporting a particular disability type, divide the total population age 5-15 reporting the disability type by the total population age 5-15 of the state. Example: Calculate the percent of people age 5-15 in Iowa reporting a physical disability. This calculation would be: 3,492/456,330=.0077 and .0077x100=0.77% which is less than 1%.
